A group of churches in Oxford have together determined to see Safe Families running in our city, where it can help to meet the needs of Oxford’s most vulnerable families. Starting in early 2024, we are recruiting volunteers, and also raising the money that’s needed for Safe Families to employ the expert staff that make the project a success.
Sally Snelson, part of our church family at OCC, is Safe Families Oxford's Family and Community Manager. The project is a partnership with churches across the city. We've mentioned their work a few times on a Sunday, but here's a little more detail about the work they do and how you can get involved through prayer, giving and volunteering.
Safe Families believes no one should feel alone and offers support, hope and belonging to isolated and overwhelmed families in our community. They link these children, young people and families with ordinary people who can provide help and support.
Safe Families works with 50+ Local Authorities, has 150 staff and currently has 5000+ volunteers from more than 1500 churches and community groups in the UK. As a result of its support, Safe Families has seen a decrease of the flow of children into care of between 9 and 16 per cent.
This video tells of just one family amongst thousands that have benefitted:
Safe Families Family Friends go through a seven-step "safer recruiting" programme, which includes references, DBS checks, and a one to one meeting. Some volunteers open up their homes and host children during the day or overnight. Resource Friends, who help provide goods and practical help (e.g., a professional trade or DIY) do not go through the full process, but are still able to offer help to families. All volunteers are offered ongoing support throughout their volunteering.
