We can give to Jesus

Sunday 11th October 2020, 10:30am

1. Welcome

Hello there! I hope you have had a lovely week. How are you getting on with learning the Lord's prayer? Let us know if you've nailed it, and if you're at home, we can post you a sticker as a well done (whatever week you read this on - never too late to get in touch!). If you're in The King's Centre, we'll be giving them out in person (but without touching them)!

2. Bible story

This week we are learning about someone who was very generous, despite having a very difficult life.

3. Activity

You will need:

  • A pot with a lid that you can cut a hole in (e.g. cocoa pot, hummous tub, gravy container)
  • Sharp knife or scissors for cutting the hole
  • Felt tips, glue and craft materials for decorating the pot, possibly including paper to wrap it in.
  • Two pennies

Cut a hole in the lid big enough to get coins through.

Write your name on the container and "My offering box" on the lid.

Decorate your box and think about what you could put in it. Something to represent your time or talents? Praise and worship? If money, how could you earn that?

Put in the two pennies as a reminder of our story and ask God what you could give.

5. Discussion and prayer

Do you know what a widow is? In Jesus's time, life was very hard for them because normally the men earned money to provide for their family. It would have been hard for a woman to earn money but she may still have had a family to look after.

What do you think the widow was thinking about when she gave her coins ("all she had to live on") to the temple?

If we had been one of the rich people and we had heard Jesus saying that we didn't give as much as the widow, how might we have felt?

What are some of the things that we can give to Jesus?

How can we make a fairer world where everyone has enough?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus,

Thank you that you care about everyone, and you took the trouble to notice someone whom other people ignored. Please help us to value everyone. Thank you for the people who look after us. Thank you that we have food on our table and in our cupboards. Please look after people who don't have enough food to eat and help us to change the system so that food is shared fairly around the world.

Amen
