God's New Year's Resolution

By Sanjay Mahtani

The start of a new year provides an opportunity to pause, to pray, and to reflect. But this January, we might feel like we've traded New Year's Resolutions for New Year's Restrictions. Last January, we had no idea what 2020 would hold. As we enter 2021, we are prompted to look to the only One who knows the future, and ask what He is doing.

What is God's New Year's Resolution?

On Sunday 3rd January, Steve Thomas (OCC's founding pastor) prophesied to us from Isaiah 43 & 44.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. (Isaiah 43:18-19). This speaks of a new thing, and a preparation 'making a way' for what is to come. Preparation, but what for?

"For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams. (Isaiah 44:3-4)

This is God's New Year's Resolution

He has been preparing to pour out water on a thirsty land, His Spirit on His people. This leads to an abundance of life, like grass in a Spring meadow. As we have prepared for this new series, we believe that God wants to bless us with new life as we catch God's heart for people, God's heart for the world, and God's heart for us to partner with him in his mission.

So, what's your part in this?

  • You might be motivated by justice; frustrated by injustices during 2020, or the way Covid has highlighted inequalities in the UK and beyond. You want to find God's grace and strength as you pray and work for a more just world.
  • You might be motivated by mercy, responding to tangible, immediate and individual needs. You know that you meet Jesus in the midst of serving the most needy in society.
  • You may call yourself an evangelist, enjoying sharing the truth of the good news about Jesus with friends, coworkers. There's nothing quite like seeing someone born again!
  • You may be reaching out in your workplace, but finding it hard to feel confident in responding to the world's questions.
  • You may have heard sermons on mission before, been involved in outreach, and wonder if it's really for you at all...

Whichever one describes you - there is a place in God's mission for YOU! God's mission is diverse, exciting, and innovative - redeeming communities, inspiring innovation, and seeing people saved across the world. God is inviting us to look afresh at His mission, seeing people and world through His loving eyes.

Join us, as we journey into God's heart...

  • Prepare to be invited into new parts of God's heart, as we see Him at work in the world.
  • Prepare to be activated through stories of God's people at work in the world.

We're excited about going on this journey with you!
