What has the greatest impact on a society’s long-term future?
Answer: its schools.
The significance of education is recognised by governments and religious organisations around the world. In several African nations where we have personal contacts there is a saying, ‘Plant a church, plant a school’! They know that there is no better way to transform society for good. We know it too.
OCC is committed to working in education. Firstly, we want to help and support our local state-funded education. We are pleased that a number of our church members are gifted teachers, whilst others are governors. We have also been working in partnership with Chapel Street Community School Trust (CSCST) on an application to start a primary ‘Free School’ in the City of Oxford that will serve and benefit the local community. We have consulted widely in the local community about this vision and, having been delighted to receive very widespread support, CSCST submitted an application in February to start a school in September 2013. We are currently waiting for a response from the Department for Education.

Secondly, as part of Oxfordshire Community Churches, we manage a successful school in Witney. The King's School, which we founded in 1984, provides a Christian education for children aged 5 to 16.
With purpose-built facilities and non-selective entry, it gains excellent academic results. It is supported by capable, well-trained volunteers. Most importantly, the children who go there are widely recognised as growing into well-behaved, responsible members of society.
More widely, we contribute expertise and support to a team of Christian educators called ‘HighLight’, who offer
in-service training to schools and professional advice to teachers, head teachers and all those working with children and young people.
